Come see the Museum of Modern Art!

Museum of Modern Art
Artwork on display at the MAMB

A beautiful gem, hidden in plain view.

If you were to walk around the block where the Museo de Arte Moderno (the Museum of Modern Art) is located, you may easily mistake it as just another residential building (it was, in fact, part of one). However, despite not possessing the flashy look of other cultural and architectural landmarks across the city, it is what lies within that truly makes this place a hidden gem of local artistic ingenuity.

The Museum of Modern Art of Barranquilla was founded in 1994. The permanent collection showcases contemporary art by both international and Colombian artists. Indeed, you can see items by Fernando Botero, Karel Appel, Ángel Loochkartt, Enrique Grau, Alejandro Obregón, Salvador Dalí, and many others.

Moreover, there is also a program for temporary exhibitions dedicated to the most outstanding modern and contemporary artists. It comprises six exhibitions a year and spans the main rooms on the first and second floors of the museum.

From comics to lecturers, interesting content for everyone

What really helps the museum stand out is its cultural agenda. It genuinely makes the museum come to life with programs such as El club del Cómic. (The comic club) is a space for comic readers and authors living in Barranquilla to share ideas and interests. Another interesting program is A-debate which invites lecturers, teachers, and academics to discuss the main issues related to contemporary art and the culture of the city.

For instance, my personal favorite is Entre Notas (Between Notes), where the museum invites local musicians and artists to pay homage to legendary musical figures from Colombia and all over the world, across all genres. Come and you will hear detailed aspects of their lives and their musical prowess. You’ll have the opportunity to share your personal experiences, and partake in a live session with the other guests. You’ll get to delve deep into what made these artists great. The best part? The museum has a very intimate setting where you can really appreciate every single note as the musicians flaunt their musical talents.

In conclusion, I’d recommend following the museum on their social media where they keep you up-to-date with the cultural agenda for each week. Plus, you can learn some random fun facts about the history of the city and its cultural heritage. The museum is located at Cra. 56 #74 – 22, very close to the El Prado Hotel and Villa Country.

The museum offers bilingual guides and has an entrance fee of 5,000 pesos for adults and 3,000 pesos for students with valid student ID, children under 10 years, and seniors (65 and over).
